What to Bring When Coming to the UK?

Packing for your first trip to the UK can be stressful. You’ll probably feel like you need to bring your entire room with you — but trust us, you don't! 😄 One of the biggest mistakes students make is bringing too many clothes from India. Bring a few comfortable everyday outfits and some warm clothes for your initial days, especially if you're arriving during the colder months. You can always buy more clothes, jackets and shoes once you're here — and you might even change your style a little once you settle in!

Instead of filling your suitcase with clothes, use some space for things that may be expensive or inconvenient to buy immediately. Bring some of your favourite spices, masalas, snacks, ready-to-cook food, pickles, tea/coffee and small cooking essentials. Most Indian groceries are easily available in the UK, so there's no need to bring your entire kitchen. 😄 Also carry a small supply of any regular medicines, basic cold/flu or stomach medicines and vitamins you normally use. If you take prescription medicines, keep them in their original packaging and carry the relevant documentation.

A small basic toolkit can also be surprisingly useful when setting up your accommodation. A screwdriver set, Allen keys, measuring tape, small pliers and a few cable ties should be enough — you don't need to bring a full toolbox! And definitely don't forget India-to-UK plug adapters 🇮🇳➡️🇬🇧. Indian and UK plugs are different, so bring 1–2 good-quality adapters for your phone, laptop and other electronics. A UK extension/power strip with USB/USB-C ports can also be very useful when you have multiple devices. Just remember to check the voltage requirements of any electrical appliances you're bringing from India.

The golden rule is simple: before putting something in your suitcase, ask yourself, "Will this be difficult or expensive to buy in the UK?" If yes, bring it. If not, save the luggage space — you can probably buy it here.
